If Roundup is Harmful, Why Do Stores Still Sell It?

For many people, shopping in a store invites a sense of trust. We assume that the products on the shelves are safe. At the very least, most believe that the warnings on products provide a fair and accurate description of the importance of proper use.

Sadly, this isn’t always the case.

Products like Roundup weed killer are still sold in stores today, despite research that shows this product is not safe for public use. Unfortunately for consumers, profit is king for most retailers, and it’s not always smart to trust that a store has your best interests in mind.

Here, we’ll take a look at products that have been proven unsafe–yet still remain on store shelves.

Neocate Baby Formula

It’s devastating for parents to see their babies struggling to get the nutrition that they need. Often, pediatricians recommend Neocate baby formula for little ones who have allergies that make it difficult to process standard formula. This formula is also recommended for babies who have certain digestive issues, such as enterocolitis syndrome and gastroesophageal reflux.

"Unfortunately for consumers, profit is king for most retailers, and it’s not always smart to trust that a store has your best interests in mind."

Babies who exclusively get their nutrition from Neocate formula are more likely than other infants to experience rickets, bone fractures, and hypophosphatemia (a condition characterized by low levels of phosphate in the blood). Bone fractures in infants aren’t just painful–they can lead to long-term problems that affect the child’s growth and development.

Roundup Weed Killer

Roundup weed killer contains glyphosate, a chemical that’s been linked to cancer in research studies. While many people experience exposure to Roundup through agricultural work, others are exposed as a result of living near a field or farm where Roundup was used.

Specifically, Roundup weed killer has been linked to the development of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a type of cancer that affects the lymph system and the body’s ability to fight disease. Initial signs of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma include swollen lymph nodes, unexplained weight loss, persistent fatigue, and chest pain. The five-year survival rate for people diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in the United States is 73%.

Talcum Powder

While some companies are phasing out the use of talcum powder in hygienic products, many retailers are still selling the original, talc-based versions of hygienic powders. Research shows that using talcum powder can lead to reproductive cancers.

Sadly, Johnson & Johnson–a key player in the hygienic powder industry–has chosen to phase out talc-based powders, rather than calling for these powders to be removed from store shelves. While it’s a step in the right direction to no longer manufacture these powders, uninformed customers are still being subjected to potential reproductive harm due to manufacturers and retailers refusing to remove the powder from stores.

DevaCurl Hair Care Products

Many people who previously enjoyed DevaCurl’s line of hair care products are now suing the company due to allegations of hair loss. In addition to causing hair to fall out, customers have also stated that the product line causes lesions and psoriasis.

The product is still sold on shelves today, despite many former customers threatening a class-action lawsuit. Some former customers stated that the pain on their scalp became so difficult to manage that they resorted to taking medication to get through the day.

Juul E-Cigarettes (Vapes)

Choice between cigarette and e-cigarette

The Food and Drug Administration has deemed that Juul e-cigarettes are not safe for consumer use. Despite this ruling, Juul products are still available on the company’s website and through retailers. According to Juul, “On June 23, 2022, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a Marketing Denial Order (MDO) for JUUL products in the United States. Since then, the FDA has issued a stay of enforcement of the MDO, while we go through an agency review process that enables the company to provide clarifying information to the FDA.”

While Juul is the current vape company under fire from the FDA, the problems linked to Juul are by no means exclusive. Health issues associated with sustained vape use include cryptogenic organizing pneumonia, popcorn lung, heart attack, stroke, seizures, and lung injuries. In addition to severe health problems, vapes have been marketed as a way to turn people away from cigarette addiction, but many people who transition from cigarette use to e-cigarette use continue to experience nicotine addiction.
