There are many bone conditions that can occur in babies, creating a wide range of effects from growth issues to unexplained fractures. Here, we’ll take a look at signs of bone problems in babies. It’s important that parents are aware of symptoms that can signal bone issues so they can alert their pediatrician to potential problems with their child’s growth and development.

What Are The Signs of Bone Problems in Babies?

One of the most common signs of an issue with the bones is bone pain. It can be hard for parents to know when their baby is in pain, and it can be even harder to determine the cause of pain. Parents who notice inconsolable or excessive crying should talk to their pediatrician to rule out potentially serious causes, such as bone problems.

Lumps and bumps in odd places can also signify a problem with the bones. Parents of babies with bone problems often notice changes in their baby’s appearance as they grow. It’s important that parents alert their pediatrician of any concerns with their baby’s growth.

Brittle or fragile bones can also indicate that a baby has a bone problem. Unexplained fractures can be a symptom of several bone conditions. When a baby or small child unexpectedly breaks a bone, it’s important that further is done to rule out underlying problems.

Here, we’ll take a look at some of the most serious bone problems in babies and young children.

McCune-Albright Syndrome

McCune-Albright syndrome affects bones and skin tissue, as well as tissues that produce hormones. Children with McCune-Albright syndrome develop polyostotic fibrous dysplasia, a condition that causes the development of scar-like tissue in the bones. Children with this syndrome may produce too much thyroid hormone, which may result in symptoms including a rapid heart rate, high blood pressure, and weight loss.

Rickets

Rickets

Children who have rickets suffer from soft and weakened bones. Usually, rickets are caused by a vitamin D deficiency. This can happen because a child does not get enough vitamin D, or because their body does not properly process vitamin D. Children who have rickets may have bowed legs, thick ankles, or a pronounced breastbone. If a pregnant mother does not get enough vitamin D, it’s possible that her baby will be born with symptoms of rickets, or that the baby will develop rickets shortly after birth.

Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is often thought of as a disease that affects older adults, but the condition can affect babies and young children as well. When a child has osteoporosis, their bones are thinner than normal, increasing the likelihood of fractures. Some medications can cause juvenile osteoporosis. Other times, the condition seemingly occurs without cause.

Hypophosphatemia

Hypophosphatemia is a condition in which a person has lower than normal levels of blood phosphate. Phosphate is important for many processes in the body, including the strengthening of the bones. When babies do not have enough blood phosphate, their bones may be weaker than normal, making unexplained fractures more likely. It’s important that babies and young children get plenty of phosphate through their daily diet.
