The 5 Most Common Workplace Accidents

Whether it’s employer negligence or a faulty mistake of the employee, workplace accidents happen! And when accidents happen, you lose work and often, money and time you can’t get back.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2020, there were 2.7 injuries per every one-hundred full-time working employees. These accidents and injuries accrue in missed work days: for older workers in the age bracket of 55-64, it’s around two weeks compared to five days for workers in the age bracket of 16-24.

Of course, there are certain industries where the chance of accidents increase, such as health care, construction, retail and manufacturing, but all employees face the risk of getting into an accident—even if you’re just sitting at a desk!

Here are the 5 most common workplace accidents and injuries that occur every year. It’s important to know this information as you may be involved in an accident at your job or suffer an injury. In this case, an attorney who specializes in employment law or accident and injury law is often your best friend.

1. Slips, Trips and Falls

It happens! Many workers fall (a bit pun-y!) victim to a slip, trip or fall due to negligence on the employer’s behalf. Whether it’s a wet floor in the office or an icy parking lot, a fall is no laughing matter. Falls can lead to broken bones, brain injuries and damage to your tissue or spinal cord.

This is why caution signs, proper weather clean-up and any flooring issues should be addressed in order to have a safe workplace for all employees

2. Falls, Part Two

Falling from heights is another top workplace accident that especially troubles employees in the construction business. Whether it’s falling from a scaffold, platform or roof, these accidents happen due to various reasons like, lack of equipment, old equipment, or faulty structures. A fall can also occur if an employee doesn’t use the safety equipment the right way, especially if his or her employer didn’t teach the worker how to use the equipment properly.

It’s very important for employees to have the right safety protection and equipment. Employers must do their due diligence to be sure this happens, as well as provide their employees with the right training on how to use these items.

3. Too Much Repetitive Motion/Effort

This type of injury is not an accident, but often the result of years of one single or many repetitive motions. While this can also happen from just one strenuous incident too, it does seem to be more cumulative, the effects building up over a number of years.

Lifting or pushing objects, carrying or pulling heavy items can be wearing on the body after many years. Not to mention that if an employee lifts a heavy item the wrong way just one time— that can cause a back injury immediately.

This type of injury doesn’t happen only from dealing with heavy items, but also, an overexertion injury can happen from constant typing at a keyboard (think, carpal tunnel syndrome) or a back or neck injury/pain from sitting at a desk.

The best way to prevent these issues is with proper supplies and proper work training. A good ergonomic desk, chair and wrist pad can be beneficial to the worker, just as much as training workers on how to lift items is beneficial to an employee who does manual labor.

4. On the Road

You might think you’ll save money by representing yourself, but even if you are successful in your case, you may not get as much compensation as you could have. You don’t know what you don’t know; there may be types of compensation you don’t even know exist. An attorney knows what type of compensation you can seek, at what amounts, and how likely you will be to actually win and get compensated.

5. Acts of Violence

While we may not like to consider “accidents” or “incidents” such as these, violent acts from another co-worker do sadly happen. Let’s also consider employees who deal with the public or, a delivery worker who could get attacked by a not-so friendly dog!

These violent acts happen and as uncomfortable as they make for discussion, employers need to train their workers on how to respond to such an unfortunate matter. It is also in the employer’s (and employee’s) best interest for the employer to do proper screening before hiring! Improper screening can cause an employer to hire a bad apple.

The Hard Facts

The reality is your employer should provide a number of things in order to prevent workplace injuries and accidents, like:

  • Proper training
  • Proper equipment
  • Proper pre-screening prior to offering employment
  • Proper support systems to report problems—whether a missing tile on a floor or, reporting a co-worker who appears to be under the influence
  • Proper signage and clean-up of all working areas
  • Proper compliance with federal and environmental regulations

But even if an employer is incredibly diligent on providing all of the above things, an accident can still happen. If you are involved in a workplace accident or are the victim of a workplace-induced injury, be smart and hire a lawyer who specializes in workers’ compensation law, employment law or accident and injury law. You want to be sure you have the best support, get the compensation you deserve and avoid a lot of heartache and physical and financial pain for the years to come.
